PC Security Camera - Security On A Budget!
The PC security camera is a cost effective way to ramp up security around your home. One question you need to answer is what level of coverage should you have.
This obviously depends on you and your budget. Choices range from a simple web PC security camera to IP cameras. The other question you need to ask is why you want to set up security coverage. This will determine the level of coverage you install and how much you are prepared to spend.
Let's take a look at some PC security camera options:
IP Security Camera Coverage
For easy installation and ease of use then IP cameras are a preferred choice. They are available at various price points from below $100 to over. Don't be fooled into thinking that by buying a camera for under a $100 it is going to be lacking in features. Check them out and you'll be surprised. From picture quality to extras such as pan, tilt and zoom, they offer an excellent starting point for your security needs.
An IP PC security camera is in fact small embedded computers and include Ethernet adapters, so you can simply connect them to your standard network and use them via standard network protocols. The configuration interface and the video stream are easily accessible from your web browser. This ease of use isn't limiting in power though. You can integrate many IP Cameras in a high quality security system, using a standard computer with lots of storage space.
Analog PC Security Camera Coverage
Thinking of upgrading your analog system to digital? Don't let your VHS-tape based security system go to waste. After all, those high quality analog cameras connected with standard coaxial cable to a central storage facility are already in place; buying a standard computer and adding video capture cards, then connecting the cameras should do the trick.
Again, if you have set yourself a budget then you'll need to watch your spending but capture cards offer plenty of adaptability. They are available with four video capture chips, and by using a round robin capture method, you could even use 8 cameras on a single card. Put two cards in the storage computer and you have 16 cameras. Thinking big, you could even purchase a second computer but only if your budget allows.
The only drawback with this system is the storage requirements but hard disks are very affordable in today's climate so you should get around this obstacle.
Web Cam Coverage
Last resort and if you don't have much of a budget to work with then why not consider the trusty standard web cam. Okay, there are issues such as lower image quality and they can struggle to perform in poor light but having some coverage is better than having none at all. They shouldn't put much of a dent in your budget either.
The bottom line is if you don't want to spend the big bucks on the more expensive security systems then consider PC security camera coverage. Your hip pocket will thank you.
