When I got home my children saw the new computer and wondered what I was going to do with it. I myself wondered the same thing I told my client that I would completely wipe out the hard drive destroying any of their personal information. Just about then a thought struck me, why not install Linux on this machine? I have had virtually no experience whatsoever with Linux other than talking to a colleague about eight or nine years ago who was just infatuated with this operating system.
So I went out and did some research on Linux and the possible flavors and stuff that are available. From all of my research it seemed that the Ubuntu releaser probably be the best bet. I proceeded to download the files and install them on my new laptop. Boy was I surprised, Ubuntu is a fabulous operating system. It is very lightweight and runs extremely fast on this rather old laptop. Not only that there are several downloads that make it an excellent educational platform for the kids.
While downloading updates and stuff from the platform I found a whole suite of educational software and also it comes with a Microsoft compatible office suite known as open office. This little computer can pretty much do anything the user asks for. As far as the educational software my four year old has found several program she loves to play and my six and nine-year-olds have plenty of applications that can work with too.
I then had a friend of mine with an old PC bring it over and I installed it on his. His wife is now jealous because her Windows PC basically sucks compared to the old reconfigured computer.
If you are interested in having an old PC was just laying around your house gathering dust converted to Linux drop me a line on my contact form and I will contact you to discuss what we can do. |
